Locked Out? Some Do's and Don'ts

Being locked out of your own home is one of those situations that feels far worse than it should. It's usually badly timed, often stressful, and can leave you standing on your own doorstep wondering what to do next. As a locksmith covering Yeovil and the surrounding Somerset towns and villages, I get called out to lockouts regularly, and there's a right way and a wrong way to handle it.

Don't panic, and don't try to force it

Most peoples first instinct is to try and force the door, aggressively jiggle the handle or even attempt to pick the lock themselves using a video they have found online. In almost every case, this will make things worse.

Forcing a door can damage the frame, snap a key in the lock, or break the mechanism entirely, potentially turning a simple lockout into an expensive repair.

If you have got a spare key with a trusted neighbour, friend or family member nearby, that's always the quickest and cheapest fix. If not, it's time to call a locksmith.

Check before you call

A few quick checks can save you time and money:

• Try every door and accessible window first. Sometimes a back door or side gate has been left unlocked.

• Check if a housemate or family member is on their way home. It might be quicker to wait than to call someone out.

• Look at your door type. Knowing whether you have a wooden door with a mortice lock, or a uPVC/composite door with a euro cylinder, helps a locksmith arrive prepared with the right tools.

• Have some ID ready. A reputable locksmith should ask for proof you live at the property, or other evidence of ownership, before letting you in. This isn't awkward, it's a sign they're doing their job properly and taking your security seriously. Many will also have a bodycam recording for your safety, as well as their own.

What a locksmith actually does

Contrary to what films and television suggest, a locksmith rarely needs to break your door down. Most lockouts can be resolved by non-destructive entry, using specialist tools to manipulate the lock without causing damage. This is quicker, cheaper, and means your door goes straight back to working normally afterwards.

In some cases, particularly with certain uPVC multipoint locking systems, non-destructive entry isn't always a possibility and a small amount of drilling may be needed. A good locksmith will always explain this before starting, and where a cylinder needs to be replaced, will normally have a suitable one on the van, so your property is never left insecure.

How quickly can you expect help?

Response times vary depending on how far out you are and the time of day, but for Yeovil and the immediately surrounding area, a locksmith should typically be able to reach you within an hour of calling, often sooner. If you're further out in the surrounding villages, it's worth mentioning your location clearly when you call so you get an honest estimate rather than a vague one.

What it might cost

Lockout pricing depends on the time of day, the type of lock, and whether entry is straightforward or requires more specialist work. Evening, weekend and emergency call-outs are usually priced higher than a daytime appointment. A trustworthy locksmith will give you a clear price, or at least a realistic range, before starting work, not after the job is done.

Avoiding it happening again

A few small habits go a long way:

• Leave a spare key with someone you trust, never hidden outside your property.

• Consider a key safe, but choose a good-quality, police-recognised one and fit it properly, not just anywhere convenient.

• If your lock is old, stiff, or you've had a close call before, it may be worth having it checked before it fails on you at the worst possible moment.
