Why Home Lock Security Matters More Than You Might Think

Your doors are the first thing a burglar tests, and for many UK homes it's also the weakest point. As a locksmith working across Yeovil and the surrounding Somerset towns and villages, I see the same problems again and again: worn-out locks, outdated cylinders and doors that only appear to be secure at first glance.

Here's why it's worth making sure your locks and home security are up to scratch:

Most break ins aren't sophisticated

The most important thing to consider here is, most burglars are opportunists. They will look for the easiest way to gain access to your property. Be that an unlocked door, a weak lock or a window left on the latch. A good lock won't make your home impossible to enter, but it does make it slower, noisier and, most importantly, riskier to break into. That alone is often enough to make a burglar move on to an easier target.

Your insurance may depend on it

Most all UK home insurance policies require specific locks on external doors and accessible windows. This commonly means a British Standard 5-lever mortice deadlock (BS 3621) on wooden doors, and suitable locks on windows and uPVC doors. If you are unlucky enough to be burgled and your locks don't meet the requirements on your home insurance policy, you could find yourself facing a reduced pay-out or even a rejected claim. It's always worth double checking your policy documents, and if you're unsure, I'm happy to look at your doors and tell you where you stand.

Uncomfortable truth: many uPVC and composite doors are vulnerable

A lot of modern doors are fitted with standard euro cylinder locks that can be snapped in seconds. Upgrading to an anti-snap cylinder (look for the TS 007 3-star kite mark or the Sold Secure Diamond rating) is one of the quickest and most affordable ways to strengthen your home. It can often be a job that takes less than an hour to complete.

Understanding the "3-star" rating

The TS 007 kite mark rates how well a euro cylinder resists snapping, and you'll often see it described in stars. To reach the full 3 stars, there are two routes:

• A 3-star cylinder on its own. This is tested to resist snapping without any help from the door furniture.

• A 1-star cylinder paired with 2-star security handles. The handles include a protective plate that shields the cylinder, and together the two components achieve a combined 3-star rating.

This is a useful option because it gives you flexibility. If you already have good quality 2 star security handles, or want to upgrade the handles as part of a refresh, a 1 star cylinder can be enough. The catch is that the combination only works when both parts are rated and fitted together correctly. A 1 star cylinder with ordinary handles does not add up to 3 stars.

Look out for products that carry the British Standards Institute heart-K logo, the standard number TS007, and two stars stamped vertically or horizontally next to it.

Lock security isn't just about burglary

Good security also protects you in other situations:

• Moving into a new home: you never know how many spare keys are out there from previous owners, tenants or tradespeople. Changing the locks is the simplest way to start fresh.

• After a lost or stolen key: act quickly. If your keys were taken along with a bag, wallet or phone, someone may well be able to work out where you live.

• After a relationship breakdown or a change in tenants: changing locks gives you peace of mind and control over who has access.

• Landlords and rental properties: keeping locks in good working order is part of keeping tenants safe and your property protected.

Simple steps you can take today

• Check that all your external doors lock properly and that the keys turn smoothly. A stiff or sticking lock is a warning sign.

• Look at your cylinders: if they sit proud of the door handle or you don't know what type you have, get them checked.

• Make sure your windows and patio doors have working locks, and use them.

• Never leave a spare key under a mat or plant pot. It's often the first place anyone looks.

• Have old or damaged locks replaced before they fail, not after.
